Field Archery

Field Archery is a form of modern archery that takes place on a multi-target course (often compared to a golf course) set out over all kinds of terrain including fields, woods and forests.

The Pasadena Roving Archers range was designed as a Field Archery range in 1934-35 and is the oldest continuously operated Field Archery range in the world!

Field Archery is not shot over flat land, but includes up, down and cross-slope shots, marked distances, varying target sizes with the added challenges of the elements including wind, rain, direct light and shadows. These additional aspects require skills known as “fieldcraft”.

There are a variety of archery competitions that are generally classified as “Field Archery”. At the PRA, we host four different types of field archery competition every month:

Field Round
Hunter Round
3D Round
Animal Round

A Field or Hunter Round is held every 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Sunday of each month.

A 3D Round is held on the 3rd Sunday of each month.

An Animal Round is held on the 4th Sunday of each month.

Once you have your own equipment, we encourage you to try out one of these fun and challenging games! Many PRA instructors also shoot the Sunday tournaments and any of them will be happy to help you get started. Please remember, however, that members are often shooting for score, which requires much of their attention. Try to limit your questions to the rules of the game. There’s plenty of time for form and equipment questions during Saturday instruction.
